A tree stump left in your yard after removal is more than an eyesore — it is a tripping hazard, a barrier to lawn maintenance, and over time a host for termites, carpenter ants, and fungal growth that can spread to healthy trees nearby. Stump grinding is the fastest and most cost-effective way to eliminate a stump completely and restore usable space to your yard.

How Stump Grinding Works

Stump grinding uses a rotating cutting wheel with hardened teeth to grind the stump and its surface roots into wood chips. The process takes anywhere from 15 minutes for a small stump to several hours for a large, old growth stump with a wide root flare. We grind to a minimum of 6 inches below grade on standard jobs — deep enough to allow grass seed or sod to be installed over the area. For situations where you intend to replant a new tree or install hardscaping, we can grind deeper upon request.

The resulting wood chips fill the hole left by the stump. You can leave them in place as natural fill — they will decompose over one to two seasons — or we can haul them away if you prefer a clean finish. Let us know your preference before we start.

Why Not Just Let the Stump Rot?

A stump left to decay naturally can take 10 to 20 years to fully break down depending on the species and size. During that time it remains a lawn mowing obstacle, a potential liability if someone trips over it, and a habitat for wood-boring insects. Termites that establish in a decaying stump in close proximity to your home create elevated risk for structural infestation. Grinding eliminates all of these issues in a single visit.

Multiple Stumps and Bundled Pricing

If you have more than one stump on your property, we offer discounted pricing for multiple stumps done in the same visit. The equipment setup and mobilization cost is the same whether we grind one stump or five — so bundling stumps is always the most cost-effective approach. We service properties throughout Allentown and the Lehigh Valley and can assess all stumps on a property in one free estimate visit.

Access and Equipment

Our stump grinding equipment can access most standard residential lots in the Lehigh Valley including fenced yards with a gate of at least 36 inches wide. For stumps in very tight spaces or areas with restricted access, contact us to discuss options before scheduling. In most cases we can find a solution.

HAVE QUESTIONS?

Frequently Asked Questions

We work with homeowners and property managers across Lehigh Valley. Here are the questions we get most.

What's left after stump grinding, do I have to dig out the roots?

Grinding removes the stump to 6–12 inches below grade, leaving wood chips and the root system in place. The roots decompose naturally over 3–7 years. For most landscaping purposes, this is sufficient — you can replant grass or plants over the area.

How big is the equipment and will it fit in my yard?

We have multiple grinder sizes including compact units that fit through standard fence gates (36" wide). Access constraints are something we assess during the estimate — no surprises on the day of service.

How long does stump grinding take?

A single stump typically takes 30–60 minutes. We can handle multiple stumps in one visit — bundling saves you on mobilization costs.

Can I plant a new tree where the old stump was?

Not immediately in the same spot — old roots compete for nutrients. We recommend waiting one growing season or filling the area with fresh topsoil and planting nearby.
